Rufus Zuphall (Progressive Folk Rock {Alemanha})

Rufus Zuphall foi uma das bandas de rock alemãs mais importantes do início dos anos setenta: só em 1971, a banda conseguiu fazer mais de 50 apresentações! A banda foi fundada em 1969 por Günter Krause (guitarra, vocal), Helmut Lieblang (baixo), Klaus Gülden (flauta) e Udo Dahmen (bateria). O estilo da banda costumava misturar rock progressivo, blues rock, hard rock e algumas músicas folk, muitas vezes instrumentais. Uma característica especial do grupo é o uso da flauta, o que às vezes gerava comparações com a banda inglesa Jethro Tull.

HISTÓRIA

Formada em Aachen em 1969 e inicialmente com um tecladista como quinto homem, a banda fundiu elementos de blues, a facilidade do folk anglo-saxão, influências clássicas e rock de guitarra com estruturas musicais progressivas em um estilo autônomo dominado por instrumental e programa ao vivo.

No início a banda não era tão voltada para a Alemanha, mas mais para os países vizinhos, Bélgica e particularmente para a Holanda, e seu avanço veio em 1970, diante de um público de 30.000 pessoas, no Festival de Jazz de Bilzen (Bélgica). Na verdade planejado como um show paralelo, ela tocou como a única banda amadora ao lado de estrelas como Black Sabbath, Cat Stevens ou May Blitz e foi celebrada pela imprensa como "surpresa do festival". Anteriormente, a Rufus Zuphall já havia aparecido com Living Blues e Cuby and The Blizzards, no mesmo ano seguiram-se shows com Curtis Jones, Group 1850 e Golden Earring.

O vocalista no palco foi o flautista Klaus Gulden. Ele teve uma influência decisiva no som da Rufus Zuphall. O baixista Helmut Lieblang escreveu as letras. Günter Krause, um talento criativo na guitarra, compôs a maior parte dos títulos e, com Udo Dahmen, Rufus Zuphall teve um baterista, que mais tarde, após os estudos musicais, tocou com Kraan, Lake, Eberhardt Schöner e Achim Reichel e é ainda hoje muito requisitado. Ele também é baterista de estúdio e trabalhou como professor na Faculdade de Música de Hamburgo. Hoje ele é diretor do Mannheim College of Popular Music.

Além de Udo Dahmen, o único outro dos vários membros da Rufus Zuphall que permaneceu fiel à carreira musical foi Günter Krause. Depois que a Rufus Zuphall terminou, ele também estudou música, depois tocou jazz e jazz-rock em várias formações - tocou até os anos 80 como guitarrista de jazz em um sexteto gravando discos. Hoje trabalha como músico, compositor e professor de violão.

No início de dezembro de 1970, Rufus Zuphall produziu ao vivo na Holanda seu primeiro LP "Weiß der Teufel..." em apenas três dias. Foi lançado em 1971 como uma edição privada pela Good Will Records - uma obra-prima do rock progressivo. A canção-título foi um "sucesso de cena" secreto e a faixa "Spanferkel" retirada do LP tornou-se a música de assinatura de um dos programas de rock de rádio alemães mais conhecidos. O LP, embora o lançamento tenha sido limitado e apesar das más condições de comercialização, foi um sucesso.

Na primavera de 1971, Rufus Zuphall gravou seu segundo LP "Phallobst" e o terceiro álbum, "Avalon and on", foi planejado para ser lançado no final de 1972. Mas nunca foi concluído. A banda se desfez em setembro de 1972. Em 1999 houve uma reunião seguida de muitos shows e do lançamento do CD "Colder than hell" em 2000.

Entre junho e setembro de 1972 houve uma curta série de 6 concertos de despedida. A última foi no início de setembro, em Eindhoven (Holanda). O primeiro foi um concerto para os seus fãs em Aachen, no dia 17 de junho de 1972, aos olhos da banda um dos verdadeiros destaques musicais da Rufus Zuphall.

Em 2004 e 2005, Long Hair lançou os dois álbuns, bem como material inédito (o terceiro álbum "perdido", "Avalon and on", e o show de despedida de 1972) em CD.

Rufus Zuphall was one of the most significant German rock bands of the early seventies: in 1971 alone, the band managed to make over 50 appearances! The band was founded in 1969 by Günter Krause (guitar, vocal), Helmut Lieblang (bass guitar), Klaus Gülden (flute) and Udo Dahmen (drums). The band's style used to blend prog rock, blues rock, hard rock and some folk-ish, often instrumental tunes. A special feature of the group is the use of the flute, which sometimes led to comparisons with the English band Jethro Tull.

HISTORY

Formed in Aachen in 1969 and initially with a keyboard player as fifth man, the band melted together blues elements, the ease of Anglo-Saxon folk, classical influences and driving guitar rock with progressive song structures into an autonomous instrumental dominated style and live programme.

In the beginning the band was not so Germany-orientated but more towards the neighbouring countries Belgium and particularly Holland and their breakthrough came accordingly in 1970 in front of a 30.000 crowd at the Jazz Festival in Bilzen (Belgium). Actually planned as a sideshow, they then played as the only amateur band next to such stars as Black Sabbath, Cat Stevens or May Blitz and were celebrated by the press as "surprise of the festival". Previously, Rufus Zuphall had even appeared with Living Blues and Cuby and The Blizzards, in the same year this was followed by gigs with Curtis Jones, Group 1850 and Golden Earring.

The front man on stage was the flutist Klaus Gulden. He had a decisive influence on the Rufus Zuphall sound. Bass player Helmut Lieblang wrote the lyrics. Günter Krause, a creative guitar talent, composed most of the titles and, with Udo Dahmen, Rufus Zuphall had a drummer, who later, after his music studies, then played with Kraan, Lake, Eberhardt Schöner and Achim Reichel and is even today much asked after. He is also studio drummer and worked as a lecturer at the Hamburg College of Music. Today he is headmaster of Mannheim College of Popular Music.

Apart from Udo Dahmen, the only other one of the various Rufus Zuphall members who remained true to a musical career was Günter Krause. After Rufus Zuphall had come to a close, he too studied music, he then played jazz and jazz-rock in various formations - he played into the 80s as a jazz guitarist in a sextet making records. Today he‘s working as a musician, composer and guitar teacher.

At the beginning of December 1970, Rufus Zuphall produced live in Holland their first LP "Weiß der Teufel..." in only three days. It was released in 1971 as a private pressing on Good Will Records - a masterpiece of progressive rock. The titlesong was a secret "scene hit" and the track "Spanferkel" taken from the LP became the signature tune for one of the best known German radio rock programmes. The LP, although the release was limited and despite bad marketing conditions, was a success.

In spring 1971 Rufus Zuphall recorded their second LP "Phallobst" and third album, "Avalon and on", was planned to release in late 1972. But it was never finished. The band disbanded in September 1972. In 1999 their was a reunion followed by a lot of gigs and the release of the CD "Colder than hell" in 2000.

Between June and September 1972 their was a short series of 6 farewell concerts. The last was at the beginning of September in Eindhoven (Holland). The first was a concert for their fans in Aachen on June 17th 1972, in the eyes of the band one of the true musical highlights of Rufus Zuphall.

In 2004 and 2005 Long Hair released the two albums as well as unreleased material (the "lost" third album, "Avalon and on", and farewell concert from 1972) on CD.
