National Head Band - Albert 1 - 1971 (Hard Proto-Progressive Rock {UK})

A National Head Band evoluiu de The Business, um grupo de R&B e blues rock que nunca gravou um LP e que incluía o guitarrista Neil Ford (guitarra, vocal), Dave Paull (baixo, teclado, guitarra, vocal), Jan Schelhaas (teclados) e John Skorsky (bateria). Todos os quatro tocaram em "Mike Hart bleeds", o álbum solo de 1969 do ex-membro da Roadrunners e vocalista da Liverpool Scene, Mike Hart.

Depois de assinar um contrato de gestão e mudar o nome, a banda conseguiu um acordo com a Warner Brothers que, por alguma razão incompreensível, insistiu que o grupo deveria ter dois bateristas. Entra Lee Kerslake (bateria, teclado, vocal). Kerslake veio da The Gods e sua ramificação Head Machine, e também tocou no primeiro álbum da Toe Fat. No entanto, assim que a banda entrou nos estúdios, o baterista John Skorsky decidiu sair.

O quarteto restante tinha gostos musicais bastante divergentes: Schelhaas era um fã de soul, Ford era um bluesman, Paull era ostensivamente um folkie e Kerslake gostava mais de rock. A tarefa de fundir todas essas influências em um álbum coerente foi dada a Eddie Offord, que havia acabado de concluir o trabalho no "The Yes album". Offord estava mais do que à altura da tarefa em questão e os resultados que alcançou são admiráveis, já que elementos dos interesses musicais de todos os membros individuais podem ser ouvidos no álbum, que se encaixa perfeitamente com outros álbuns lançados no início dos anos setenta que são reconhecidos como clássicos da florescente cena progressiva. A incompetência da gravadora, uma turnê inoportuna e fora de lugar pelos locais do Top Rank e todo um lote de prensagens defeituosas de álbuns não fizeram nenhum favor à banda que, sem ser anunciada, se separou no final do mesmo ano.

Embora este não seja um álbum clássico há muito perdido, a National Head Band mostrou-se mais do que suficientemente promissora de que a banda poderia ter alcançado coisas muito maiores. Mas, ao invés disso, Kerslake juntou-se à Uriah Heep, Jan Schelhaas teve passagens pela Camel e pela Caravan (para o álbum "The unauthorised breakfast item") e Paull se juntou à, também excelente, Jonesy.

The National Head Band evolved from The Business, an R&B and blues rock group that never recorded an LP, and which included guitarist Neil Ford (guitar, vocal), Dave Paull (bass, keyboards, guitar, vocal), Jan Schelhaas (keyboards) and John Skorsky (drums). All four played on "Mike Hart bleeds", the 1969 solo album by former Roadrunners member and Liverpool Scene frontman Mike Hart.

After signing a management deal and changing the name, the band got a deal with Warner Brothers who, for some unfathomable reason, insisted that the group should have two drummers. Enter Lee Kerslake (drums, keyboards, vocal). Kerslake came from The Gods and its offshoot Head Machine, and he also played on Toe Fat's first album. However, no sooner had the band entered the studios than drummer John Skorsky decided to quit.

The remaining quartet had quite divisive musical tastes: Schelhaas was a soul fan, Ford was a bluesman, Paull was ostensibly a folkie and Kerslake was more into rock. Given the task of melding all these influences into a coherent album was Eddie Offord who had just completed work on "The Yes album". Offord was more than up to the task in hand and the results he achieved are admirable as elements of all of the individual members musical interests can be heard on the album, which fits neatly in with other albums released in the early seventies that are recognised as classics of the blooming progressive scene. Label incompetency, a mistimed and misplaced tour of Top Rank venues, and a whole batch of faulty album pressings did the band no favours who, unheralded, split later the same year.

Although this not a long-lost classic album, the National Head Band showed more than enough promise that the band could have achieved far greater things. Instead Kerslake went off to join Uriah Heep, Jan Schelhaas had stints in both Camel and Caravan (for "The unauthorised breakfast item" album) and Paull joined the also excellent Jonesy.
