Automatic Fine Tuning - A.F.T. - 1976 (Heavy Progressive Rock {UK})

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In 1976, guitarists Paul A. MacDonnell and Robert Cross, bassist Trevor Darks and drummer/vocalist Dave Ball combined their considerable skills and produced one of the great, but almost forgotten, progressive heavy projects: Automatic Fine TuningMaking an early form of neo-classical instrumental rock that precedes the gothic harmonies and pagan love of Michael Schenker and Yngwie Malmsteen, the quartet boldly went where few rock bands had gone and recorded a brilliant album before breaking up.

Not much metal, far from being fusion and which resembles any known form of prog, the record is a humble but impressive showcase of how classical technique and discipline could be used in hard rock, and has extraordinary guitar lines from the duo MacDonnell & Cross.

The impact that this release had on musicians in 1976 is unknown, but the quartet's prophetic ideas and performance reveal a unity well ahead of its time. Recommended for anyone with a taste for rock guitar technology in one of its early beginnings.

  2. I first heard this on John Peel's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Peel) show on BBS Radio One. My favourite track of all time was, and still is, The Great Panjandrum heel (Pat 2). The original vinyl recording had a nice echo effect on the final note of that track which was missing on the later released CD. While this may have an artifact of the vinyl recording itself, I thought it better than the abrupt end of the CD version.
