Iron Maiden - Maiden voyage [1968-1970] - 1998 (Heavy Psychedelic Proto-Progressive Rock {UK})

A banda foi formada em 1964, Essex, Inglaterra com os músicos: Barry Skeels (baixo, vocal), Steve Drewett (vocal, gaita), Chris Rose (guitarra) e Alan Hooker (bateria). Em 1966 ocorre a primeira troca de músicos, passando por Steve Drewett (vocal, gaita), Chris Rose (guitarra), Tom float (guitarra rítmica), Stan Gillem (bateria) e Barry Skeels (baixo).

Em 1968, sob o nome de Bum e com Paul Reynolds na bateria, a banda tocou em alguns pubs locais e, mais tarde, gravou um compacto independente: "Ballad of Martha Kent/God of darkness". No final de 1968, a banda mudou seu nome para Iron Maiden. O baterista, que por acaso é Steve Chapman, em 1969, assinou um contrato de risco com a Gemini Records, lançando em 1970, o compacto "Falling/Ned Kelly" que segue uma linha psicodélica e progressiva com guitarras pesadas e distorcidas. O contrato duraria 3 anos se o disco tivesse sucesso e a banda fizesse uma pequena turnê na Austrália. A música "Falling" chama a atenção, especialmente por seu baixo ritmo e alguns riffs de guitarra reminiscentes de uma certa banda de mesmo nome.

Em 1970 o baterista Paul Reynolds retorna e a banda lança mais dois singles: "Liar/Ritual" e "C.C. Ryder/Plague". Os bons resultados do compacto fazem a banda crescer no underground local, abrindo shows para grandes bandas como The Who e The Amen Corner. Em 1972, antes da conclusão de seu primeiro LP, a banda misteriosamente sai do show business.

Steve Harris, em sua biografia, diz que alguém com um sotaque diferente do inglês, ligou para ele em 1976 e o ​​ameaçou de ser processado por estar usando esse nome, Iron Maiden.

The band was formed in 1964, Essex, England with the musicians: Barry Skeels (bass, vocals), Steve Drewett (vocals, harmonica), Chris Rose (guitar) and Alan Hooker (drums). In 1966 there was the first exchange of musicians, including Steve Drewett (vocals, harmonica), Chris Rose (guitar), Tom float (rhythm guitar), Stan Gillem (drums) and Barry Skeels (bass).

In 1968, under the name Bum and with Paul Reynolds on drums, the band played in a few local pubs and later recorded an independent compact: "Ballad of Martha Kent/God of darkness". In late 1968, the band changed its name to Iron Maiden.  The drummer, who happened to be Steve Chapman in 1969, signed a contract with Gemini Records, releasing in 1970 the compact "Falling/Ned Kelly" that follows a psychedelic and progressive line with heavy and distorted guitars. The contract would last 3 years if the album was successful and the band toured Australia. The song "Falling" catches the eye, especially for its low tempo and some guitar riffs reminiscent of a certain band of the same name.

In 1970 drummer Paul Reynolds returns and the band releases two more singles: "Liar/Ritual" and "C.C. Ryder/Plague". The good results of the  compact make the band grow in the local underground, opening shows for big bands like The Who and The Amen Corner. In 1972, before the conclusion of its first LP, the band mysteriously leaves show business.

Steve Harris in his biography says that someone with a different English accent called him in 1976 and threatened to sue him for using that name, Iron Maiden.

In 1998 the CD collection called "Maiden voyage" released by Hi-Note Music (which describes the band as "archetypal doom metal"). includes the music of the time when the band was called Bum, plus all the singles released under the name Iron Maiden. In the booklet of the CD, is presented a contract with Gemini Records and some posters, as well as photos and concert tickets, proving they came before the current Iron Maiden.
