Marsupilami (Progressive Rock {UK})

HISTÓRIA

Marsupilami foi uma banda de rock progressivo inglesa ativa no início dos anos 70. Seu nome foi tirado de um famoso personagem de quadrinhos belga criado pelo artista (belga) André Franquin.

Em 1969, a banda excursionou com Deep Purple e tocou na abertura do Isle of Wight Festival quando King Crimson se retirou. Eles lançaram dois álbuns, "Marsupilami" (1970) e "Arena" (1971), na Transatlantic Records. Os álbuns foram reeditados na Cherry Red Records em 2007 (Esoteric Records é uma gravadora da Cherry Red Records). A banda brevemente se reuniu para shows em 2011.

Marsupilami era um protótipo inglês de proto-prog que se mudou para a Holanda. HISTORY

Marsupilami was an English progressive rock band active in the early 1970s. Its name was taken from a famous Belgian comics character created by (Belgian) artist André Franquin.

In 1969, the band toured with Deep Purple, and played at the opening of the Isle of Wight Festival when King Crimson withdrew. They released two albums, "Marsupilami" (1970) and "Arena" (1971), on Transatlantic Records. The albums were reissued on Cherry Red Records in 2007 (Esoteric Records is a Cherry Red Records label). The band briefly reunited for gigs in 2011.

Marsupilami was an English proto-prog outfit who relocated to the Netherlands. The complexity of its music is quite unusual for the times - we're talking 1970 here, when the big guns such as Yes, Genesis and King Crimson were barely coming out of the woodwork. A mixture of blues, experimental jazz and hints of folk, its music is often dark and foreboding, favouring perilously complex structures. Try to imagine a mixture of King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Strawbs and East of Eden.

Its two albums feature weird and oblique melodies and harmonies, lots of heavy keyboards, electric guitar and flute, with the drummer pounding on his skins as if his life depended on it. This is very early progressive rock and you particularly feel this in the organ work, which has a typical early 70's psychedelic feel. Its second album, which features an additional member on flute and sax as well as the appearance of the Mellotron, is an ambitious concept album about the brutal culture of ancient Rome - quite a sordid affair, really, but well done. It has a slightly better sound than the first album although most progsters generally favour the first.

AFTER MARSUPILAMI

The singer Jessica Stanley Clarke later became known as Jekka McVicar, who is one of the UK's best-known organic gardening experts, and proprietor of Jekka's Herb Farm near Bristol. Fred Hasson has followed a career in media industries - TV, dotcom (company that performs its business activities mainly through the internet) and video games, but can sometimes be seen at jam sessions in London playing harmonica. Leary Hasson still lives on the farm the band rehearsed in, and still plays in a number of local outfits. Bob West is now an artist living in France. Mike Fouracre works at the Arts Council. Paul Dunmall is still playing on the free jazz circuit with Keith Tippett and others.
