Redd (Progressive Rock {Argentina})

Redd foi a banda progressista mais proeminente de Tucuman (Argentina). Após a dissolução de La Pequena Banda de Tricupa (ou Tricupa), o guitarrista Luis Albornoz e o baterista Juan Escalante decidiram seguir em frente e formar uma nova banda com uma veia mais experimental (o baixista Esteban Cerioni se juntou muito em breve).

Em janeiro de 1977, Redd era uma realidade. O departamento criativo foi concluído com a participação de Ricardo Gandolfo como letrista. A estréia da banda no palco aconteceu em junho do mesmo ano, quando o trio era o principal de L. A. Spinneta, um dos maiores heróis da história do rock argentino. No final de 1977, Redd contatou o pessoal da M.I.A. a fim de se familiarizar com a dinâmica de gravação e distribuição independentes. Em 1978, o trio ganhou um culto menor entre os frequentadores de concertos em Buenos Aires e uma boa recepção crítica. É em 1979 que a banda consegue lançar o álbum de estréia "Tristes noticias del Imperio", que havia sido gravado no ano anterior. Ele afirmou uma mistura de Invisible, Genesis e King Crimson, com toques de jazz-rock. A instrumentação foi aumentada com os ornamentos de teclado entregues por Cerioni e Escalante, mais o primeiro adicionando um violão além de suas entradas de baixo/teclado. Algumas semanas após a conclusão da gravação do álbum, Escalante foi diagnosticado com uma doença que afetou severamente sua audição: este evento trágico levou-o a desistir da música. Finalmente, em 2005, ele perdeu sua batalha contra o câncer.

Em 1979, a nova formação da banda foi ampliada para um quinteto, com a entrada do vocalista Oscar Imhoff, do tecladista Pollo Raffo e do novo baterista Marcos Pusineri. O estilo permaneceu essencialmente o mesmo, mas a instrumentação era mais completa e mais poderosa, enfatizando um pouco o aspecto sinfônico - sem dúvida que isso se devia à presença de um tecladista permanente. Perto do final de 1979, o segundo álbum de Redd, "Cuentos del subsuelo", foi gravado e tinha sido planejado para ser lançado no começo de 1980, mas não era para ser. A banda se dissolveu em 1981. Desde que Raffo deixou a banda para estudar música em Berklee (EUA), Lito Vitale tocou teclados para a banda nos últimos shows. "Cuentos del subsuelo" conheceu seu primeiro lançamento em formato digital em 1996.

Este não foi o fim para Redd. De fato, algo especial aconteceu e trouxe Redd de volta ao mapa: em 27 de dezembro de 2002, um show chamado Re-Union reuniu antigas bandas de tucumanos dos anos 70 e 80 - Tango, Tricupa, Redd e Jalea. Havia pelo menos um membro Redd em qualquer uma das outras três bandas, então a ocasião foi clara para uma possível reunião, o que certamente aconteceu. Um CD duplo intitulado "Re-Union" também foi lançado, e o show foi repetido em agosto de 2003: este projeto se tornou uma turnê nacional em julho de 2004. As fileiras do Redd estavam cheias de veteranos como Imhoff, Cerioni e Albornoz, além do baterista Carlos Capdevila, o tecladista Mark Edwards e um segundo guitarrista chamado Luis Corvalan. Juan Escalante fez uma participação como vocalista adicional em algumas faixas do "Re-Union" de 2003. Durante anos, Redd tem sido basicamente um acordo on-and-off, com Albornoz e Cerioni ocasionalmente reformando a banda para ocasiões especiais - um deles foi o Concerto do 30º Aniversário em 2007 no Auditório de Santa Maria, em Buenos Aires, que viu a formação do "Cuentos del subsuelo" reunir-se pela primeira vez em muitos anos. Além disso, os dois membros fundadores acima mencionados têm trabalhado lentamente na gravação de material novo com o baterista do Fraktal, Humberto Salazar, nos últimos anos.

Redd was the most prominent progressive band from Tucuman (Argentina). After the dissolution of La Pequena Banda de Tricupa (or Tricupa), guitarist Luis Albornoz and drummer Juan Escalante decided to move on and form a new band with a more experimental vein (the bassist Esteban Cerioni joined very soon).

In January 1977 Redd was a reality. The creative department was completed with the participation of Ricardo Gandolfo as lyricist. The band's debut on stage took place in June of that same year, when the trio headlined for L. A. Spinneta, one of the greatest heroes in the history of Argentina's rock. By the end of 1977, Redd contacted the people of M.I.A. in order to get acquainted with the dynamics of independent recording and distribution. In 1978, the trio gained a minor cult among concert goers in Buenos Aires and a good critical reception. It is in 1979 that the band manages to release the debut album "Tristes noticias del Imperio", which had been recorded the year before. It stated a mixture of Invisible, Genesis and King Crimson, with touches of jazz-rock. The instrumentation was augmented with the keyboard ornaments delivered by Cerioni and Escalante, plus the former adding some acoustic guitar besides his bass/keyboard inputs. A few weeks after the completion of the album's recording, Escalante was diagnosed with a disease that severely affected his hearing: this tragic event led him to give up music. Finally, in 2005, he lost his battle against cancer.

Back in 1979: the band's new line-up was augmented into a quintet, with the entry of lead singer Oscar Imhoff, keyboardist Pollo Raffo and new drummer Marcos Pusineri. The style remained essentially the same, but the instrumentation was fuller and more powerful, somewhat emphasizing the symphonic aspect - no doubt that this was due to the presence of a permanent keyboardist. Near the end of 1979, Redd's sophomore album "Cuentos del subsuelo" had been recorded and it had been planned for release by early 1980, but it wasn't meant to be. The band dissolved in 1981. Since Raffo had left the band to pursue musical studies in Berklee (USA), Lito Vitale played keyboards for the band in the last concerts. "Cuentos del subsuelo" eventually met its first release in digital format in 1996.

This was not the end for Redd. In fact, something special happened that brought Redd back to the map: on the December, 27th of 2002, a show called Re-Union gathered old Tucuman bands from the 70s and the 80s - Tango, Tricupa, Redd and Jalea. There was at least one Redd member in any of the other three bands, so the occasion was clear for a possible reunion, which most certainly happened. A double CD titled "Re-Union" as well was released, and the show was repeated in August of 2003: this project became a nationwide tour in July of 2004. The Redd ranks were filled with veterans Imhoff, Cerioni and Albornoz, plus drummer Carlos Capdevila, keyboardist Mark Edwards and a second guitarist named Luis Corvalan. Juan Escalante made a guest appearance as additional lead vocalist on a few tracks of the 2003 Re-Union. For years, Redd has basically been an on-and-off deal, with Albornoz and Cerioni occasionally reforming the band for special occasions - one of them was the 30th Anniversary Concert in 2007 at the Santa Maria Auditorium, in Buenos Aires, which saw the "Cuentos del subsuelo" line-up gathered together for the first time in many years. Also, the aforementioned two founding members have been slowly working on the recording of new material with Fraktal drummer Humberto Salazar for the last few years.
