HISTÓRIA

Saft (que significa abóbora, como no líquido concentrado feito de suco de fruta e açúcar, que é diluído para fazer uma bebida, em norueguês) é uma banda de rock progressivo de Bergen, na Noruega, com seu período mais ativo no início dos anos 70. A banda foi uma das primeiras do rock norueguês a cantar em norueguês Nynorsk - que é baseado no norueguês rural falado, e é uma das quatro línguas oficiais da Noruega.

A precursora da Saft foi a banda Neither Nor, de 1966, com Karsten Ølsen (das bandas Nøkken e DMD) na bateria e Oddvar Rørtveit no baixo. Em 1970, na cidade de Bergen, o vocalista Ove Thue (1951-2022), o guitarrista Trygve Thue (1950-2022), o tecladista Tom Harry Halvorsen (nascido em 1950), o baterista Magne Lunde (1951-2021) e o baixista Rolf Skogstrand (nascido em 1950) formaram a banda Saft.

HISTORY

Saft (which means pumpkin, as in concentrated liquid made from fruit juice and sugar, which is diluted to make a drink, in Norwegian) is a progressive rock band from Bergen, Norway, with its most active period in the early 70s. The band was one of the first in Norwegian rock to sing in Nynorsk Norwegian - which is based on spoken rural Norwegian, and is one of the four official languages of Norway.

The precursor to Saft was the band Neither Nor, from 1966, with Karsten Ølsen (from the bands Nøkken and DMD) on drums and Oddvar Rørtveit on bass. In 1970, in the city of Bergen, vocalist Ove Thue (1951-2022), guitarist Trygve Thue (1950-2022), keyboardist Tom Harry Halvorsen (born 1950), drummer Magne Lunde (1951-2021) and bassist Rolf Skogstrand (born 1950) formed the band Saft.

The band played its debut show in Bergen in October 1970. Saft was also the main element during the staging of the rock musical "Hair" at the Nationale Scene in Bergen in 1970, in which they participated as musicians and actors.

The following year, the band got a contract with Polydor Records and debuted with the release of the album "Saft". In autumn 1971, Saft reached the top of the European charts with the single "People in motion", which reached number 4 in Norway and allowed the band to win the European Pop Jury (Norway's first win in the competition) on 26 November 1971. Like the debut album, the following album was moderately successful, reaching 18th place.

Saft broke up in 1972, but the Thue brothers put together a new lineup the following year: Rune Walle (guitar, banjo), Kaare Øivind Moldestad (bass) and Gunnar Bergstrøm (drums).

At the 1973 Spellemann Prize, Egil Monn-Iversen interrupted a planned interaction between prize winners Sigbjørn Bernhoft Osa and Saft. Monn-Iversen believed that the quality of the live performance was not appropriate for a TV broadcast. The collaboration developed further and was later presented during the opening of the first Ragnaröck Festival and the Holmenkollen in 1973. The collaboration also resulted in the LP "Stev, sull, rock og rull" in the same year. The collaboration between Osa and Saft was well received by young people, but at the same time it shocked the traditional music world.

Saft split again in 1974, when Walle and Bergstrøm founded Flying Norwegians, while Ove and Trygve Thue, Tom Harry Halvorsen and Magne Lunde formed Brødrene Thue's Danseensemble, which released albums in 1975 and 1976 - the last album under the name Brødrene Thue's Ensemble.

Trygve Thue then worked as a producer in his own studio, while Ove Thue released several solo albums. The band got back together in 1996, releasing most of its own material on a double CD the same year and playing regular shows ever since, including a show at Storåsfestivalen in 2004.

CURIOSITIES

On Thursday, September 29, 2011, Saft and the late Sigbjørn Bernhoft Osa received the first Ragnaröck Prize from the jury for the newly created "Arven etter Ragnaröck" ("The Legacy of Ragnaröck"). The honorary award would go to someone who excelled in international artistic and genre activities.
