HISTÓRIA

AS ORIGENS: Gli Amici e The Ghenga's Friends

O grupo foi formado em Milão por Enrico Maria Papes (do conjunto de Clem Sacco) na bateria, Mino Di Martino na guitarra, Giannino Zinzone (do grupo I Ribelli) no baixo, Checco Marsella nos teclados e Benvenuto Benny Pretolani no sax - em 1959 começou a se apresentar no clube Santa Tecla em Milão para acompanhar Ghigo Agosti para substituir a formação anterior do Arrabbiati com Gaber. Em 1962 a banda também acompanhou o cantor Guidone, primeiro com o nome de Gli Amici.

Em 1963, Giannino Zinzone foi substituído pelo irmão de Mino, Sergio Di Martino, enquanto Pretolani deixou o grupo. Em 1964 mudaram o nome para The Ghenga's Friends, passando a colaborar com a gravadora La Ghenga como grupo de acompanhamento de vários cantores que gravaram para a gravadora como An'Neris e Le Marzianine. No mesmo ano decidiram dedicar-se a uma carreira por conta própria, mas Marsella permaneceu para acompanhar Guidone, sendo assim substituído primeiro por Paolo Avallone, depois por Ignazio Garsia, apenas para regressar ao grupo em meados de 1965. 1965-1968: I Giganti

Também em 1967, em maio, venceram a segunda edição do Festival dei Complessi di Rieti. No Festival de Sanremo de 1968 cantaram a música "Da bambino" em conjunto com Massimo Ranieri, ocupando o sétimo lugar, mas sem obter o sucesso das músicas anteriores e, alguns meses depois, por motivos nunca esclarecidos, o grupo comunicou a intenção de dissolver, marcando para 10 de setembro de 1968 o fim da associação, para se dedicar à carreira solo. Enrico Maria Papes gravou alguns singles para a gravadora de Natalino Otto, Telerecord, incluindo a música tema do programa de televisão "La filibusta". Em 1969, porém, Francesco Marsella participou sozinho do Festival com "Il sole è tramontato".

1970-1976: A reunião

Em 1970 o grupo foi reformado e no verão eles apresentaram a música "Voglio essere una scimmia" no Cantagiro, escrita por Vince Tempera. No ano seguinte eles voltaram pela terceira vez a San Remo com a música "Il viso di lei", em combinação com Fabio Trioli, mas sem chegar à final, então lançaram o álbum "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)", um álbum conceitual sobre a máfia e a distribuição de água gerida pela própria máfia. Álbum que foi censurado devido ao seu conteúdo. Seguindo essa censura, o grupo, incapaz de se expressar e não querendo voltar aos velhos padrões musicais, decidiu dar um fim. Dos membros, o único a permanecer ativo como artista foi Mino Di Martino, que colaborou com o cantor e compositor Franco Battiato. Em 1976 Marsella e Papes reconstituíram o grupo, com William Fumanelli e Kambiz Kaboli, mas após dois anos de atividade ao vivo essa formação também se dissolveu.

TERRA IN BOCCA

O álbum foi lançado pela Ri-Fi em 1971. É de fato um ato de coragem, uma forte acusação contra a máfia pela guerra da água na seca Sicília. A história de dois jovens amantes se confunde com a história da cidade e é vividamente descrita nos textos de Piero De Rossi, ainda muito atuais. A música é quase toda de Mino De Martino, mas foram depositadas no Siae por Vince Tempera, que cuidou dos arranjos do disco e compôs todas as partes instrumentais. As músicas são 12, todas interligadas, sem pausa.

O disco foi gravado no Studi Play-co de Milão, e o guitarrista da Latte e Miele, Marcello Giancarlo Dellacasa, também colaborou para a gravação, assim como Ellade Bandini e Ares Tavolazzi, ao lado de Vince Tempera da The Pleasure Machine.

ANOS 90: Novo reencontro

O grupo voltou a se reformar algumas vezes, pela primeira vez em 1992 com Papes e Sergio Di Martino, enquanto no ano seguinte os quatro membros originais se reuniram para um concerto no Teatro Lirico em Milão para lembrar o produtor musical Gianni Sassi: nesta ocasião, auxiliado por Ellade Bandini na bateria, Ares Tavolazzi no baixo, Vince Tempera nos teclados e Gigi Rizzi na guitarra, o grupo propôs tocar, pela primeira vez ao vivo, o álbum "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)".

Papes e Marsella reconstituíram o grupo em 1998 sem Sergio Di Martino, falecido dois anos antes, em 28 de fevereiro de 1996, e sem seu irmão Mino, que não tinha vontade de colaborar. Em seu lugar foram inseridos Kambiz Kaboli no baixo e Giò De Luigi no refrão vocal.

ANOS 2000

Com fórmulas diferentes Papes e Marsella continuaram juntos até o final de 2005. Em 2006, eles novamente se apresentaram com uma nova formação, na qual apenas Enrico Maria Papes (voz, percussão) do grupo original permaneceu, agora ladeado por seu filho Alessandro "Ally" Papes (vocal e bateria, ex Contropotere), Francesco Romagna (vocal, teclados e guitarra) e Enrico Santacatterina (vocal, guitarra, baixo). Em 2009, o álbum "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)" foi relançado com uma faixa bônus, como anexo a um volume, publicado pelas edições Il Margine, que relatava uma série de entrevistas com os músicos que trabalharam no álbum, bem como e ao mesmo grupo, reconstituindo os acontecimentos históricos do álbum.

Em 2011 I Giganti ganhou o Prêmio Paolo Borsellino, justamente por "Terra in bocca" (que comemora 40 anos de publicação): para a ocasião Mino, Checco e Enrico re-executou parte do álbum ao vivo em versão acústica.

HISTORY

THE ORIGINS: Gli Amici and The Ghenga's Friends

The group was formed in Milan by Enrico Maria Papes (from the Clem Sacco group) on drums, Mino Di Martino on guitar, Giannino Zinzone (from the I Ribelli group) on bass, Checco Marsella on keyboards and Benvenuto Benny Pretolani on sax - in 1959 started performing at the Santa Tecla club in Milan to accompany Ghigo Agosti to replace the previous Arrabbiati lineup with Gaber. In 1962 the band also accompanied the singer Guidone, first with the name of Gli Amici.

In 1963, Giannino Zinzone was replaced by Mino's brother Sergio Di Martino, while Pretolani left the group. In 1964 they changed their name to The Ghenga's Friends, starting to collaborate with the La Ghenga label as a backing group for several singers who recorded for the label such as An'Neris and Le Marzianine. In the same year they decided to dedicate themselves to a career on their own, but Marsella remained to accompany Guidone, thus being replaced first by Paolo Avallone, then by Ignazio Garsia, only to return to the group in mid-1965. That year they were still on stage. That year they were still on stage at Santa Tecla with Ghigo Agosti.

1965-1968: I Giganti

Inspired by the musical genre of the moment, the beat, with gospel and rock'n'roll influences, the group debuted with the new name and with the theme "Morirai senza di lei". Success came in 1966 with their participation in the television show Un disco, for the summer, where they took third place with the song "Tema", which remained at number one on the charts for seven weeks and which was also included in the musical film by Enzo Dell'Aquila, "Il ragazzo che sapeva amare". They then participated in the 14th Festival of Naples, with "Na guagliona yè yè", in combination with Aurelio Fierro & i Sanniti, and "Ce vò tiempo", with Peppino Di Capri and i suoi Rockers. A big hit of that year was also "Una ragazza in due".

The following year they took third place in Sanremo with "Proposta", in combination with the English trio The Bachelors and then participated in the summer in Cantagiro with "Io e il presidente", also in third place, but censored by RAI due to the text, considered disrespectful to the President of the Republic. Also in 1967, in May, they won the second edition of the Festival dei Complessi di Rieti. At the Sanremo Festival in 1968 they sang the song "Da bambino" together with Massimo Ranieri, occupying the seventh place, but without obtaining the success of the previous songs and, a few months later, for reasons never clarified, the group communicated the intention to dissolve, marking the end of the association for September 10, 1968, to dedicate himself to a solo career. Enrico Maria Papes recorded a few singles for Natalino Otto's record company, Telerecord, including the theme song for the television show "La filibusta". In 1969, however, Francesco Marsella participated alone in the Festival with "Il sole è tramontato".

1970-1976: The reunion

In 1970 the group was reformed and in the summer they performed the song "Voglio essere una scimmia" at Cantagiro, written by Vince Tempera. The following year they returned for the third time to San Remo with the song "Il viso di lei", in combination with Fabio Trioli, but without reaching the final, so they released the album "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)", a concept album about the mafia and the water distribution managed by the mafia itself. Album that was censored due to its content. Following this censorship, the group, unable to express themselves and not wanting to return to old musical patterns, decided to break up. Of the members, the only one to remain active as an artist was Mino Di Martino, who collaborated with singer-songwriter Franco Battiato. In 1976 Marsella and Papes reconstituted the group, with William Fumanelli and Kambiz Kaboli, but after two years of live activity, this formation also dissolved.

TERRA IN BOCCA

The album was released by Ri-Fi in 1971. It is indeed an act of courage, a strong indictment against the mafia for the water war in drought Sicily. The story of two young lovers is intertwined with the city's history and is vividly described in Piero De Rossi's texts, which are still very current. The music is almost entirely by Mino De Martino, but they were deposited in Siae by Vince Tempera, who arranged the album and composed all the instrumental parts. There are 12 songs, all interconnected, without pause.

The record was recorded at Milan's Studi Play-co, and Latte and Miele guitarist Marcello Giancarlo Dellacasa also collaborated on the recording, as did Ellade Bandini and Ares Tavolazzi, alongside Vince Tempera of The Pleasure Machine.

90's: New reunion

The group reformed a few times again, first in 1992 with Papes and Sergio Di Martino, while the following year the four original members reunited for a concert at the Teatro Lirico in Milan to remember music producer Gianni Sassi: on this occasion, aided by Ellade Bandini on drums, Ares Tavolazzi on bass, Vince Tempera on keyboards and Gigi Rizzi on guitar, the group proposed to play, for the first time live, the album "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)".

Papes and Marsella reconstituted the group in 1998 without Sergio Di Martino, who had died two years earlier on February 28, 1996, and without his brother Mino, who had no desire to collaborate. In its place were inserted Kambiz Kaboli on bass and Giò De Luigi on vocal chorus.

2000'S

With different formulas Papes and Marsella continued together until the end of 2005. In 2006, they again performed with a new lineup, in which only Enrico Maria Papes (vocals, percussion) of the original group remained, now flanked by his son Alessandro "Ally" Papes (vocals and drums, ex Contropotere), Francesco Romagna (vocals, keyboards and guitar) and Enrico Santacatterina (vocals, guitar, bass). In 2009, the album "Terra in bocca (poesia di un delitto)" was re-released with a bonus track, as an attachment to a volume, published by Il Margine editions, which reported a series of interviews with the musicians who worked on the album, as well as as and to the same group, reconstructing the historical events of the album.

In 2011 I Giganti won the Paolo Borsellino Award, precisely for "Terra in bocca" (which celebrates 40 years of publication): for the occasion Mino, Checco and Enrico re-performed part of the album live in an acoustic version.
