Trees (Progressive Psych Folk Rock {UK})

Trees foi uma banda britânica de folk rock que gravou e fez turnês ao longo de 1969, 1970 e 1971, reformando-se brevemente para continuar se apresentando ao longo de 1972. Embora o grupo tenha tido pouco sucesso comercial em sua época, a reputação da banda cresceu ao longo dos anos e passou por um renascimento em 2007 após a amostragem de Gnarls Barkley da faixa "Geordie" (do segundo álbum da Trees, "On the shore") na faixa-título de seu álbum multimilionário "St. Elsewhere".

HISTÓRIA

FORMAÇÃO

A banda original era composta por cinco membros: o baixista e tecladista Bias Boshell, o guitarrista solo Barry Clarke, o violonista David Costa, o baterista Unwin Brown e a cantora Celia Humphris.

David Costa, filho do cantor e apresentador de rádio britânico Sam Costa, estava estudando Belas Artes na recém-inaugurada Universidade de East Anglia quando conheceu Barry Clarke (que trabalhava na agência de publicidade Royd's em Londres) por meio de uma namorada em comum que havia sugerido, como ambos eram guitarristas, eles deveriam se conectar. CARREIRA

Assinada com a CBS em agosto de 1969, Trees produziu dois álbuns de estúdio em uma sucessão relativamente rápida, "The garden of Jane Delawney" e "On the shore", ambos gravados nos estúdios Sound Techniques de Chelsea, e ambos produzidos por Tony Cox. Como outras contemporâneas populares, Trees foi comparada à Fairport Convention, mas considerada como apresentando um toque mais psicodélico. O material do grupo foi dividido entre adaptações de canções tradicionais e composições originais, principalmente de Bias Boshell. O grupo original se desfez em 1971 após a gravação dos dois álbuns. Uma segunda encarnação da Trees se formou em 1972 e tocou até 1973: este grupo apresentava Celia Humphris, Barry Clarke, Barry Lyons (ex-membro da Mr. Fox), Alun Eden (também ex-membro da Mr. Fox) e Chuck Fleming (ex-membro da JSD Band). As gravações desta formação podem ser encontradas em lançamentos piratas.

Esta última formação também contribuiu para o álbum solo de Phil Trainer, "Trainer" (BASF, 1972).

ÁLBUNS

"The garden of Jane Delawney" foi gravado no início de 1970 e lançado em 24 de abril de 1970. Neste álbum a formação era: Celia Humphris nos vocais principais, Barry Clarke na guitarra e violão, David Costa na guitarra, violão de 12 cordas e no design e pintura da capa, Bias Boshell no baixo, vocal, violão, Unwin Brown na bateria e os engenheiros Mike FitzHenry e Vic Gamm.

Françoise Hardy fez um cover de "The garden of Jane Delawney" em seu álbum "If you listen". All About Eve fez um cover de "The garden of Jane Delawney" como lado B de seu single "What kind of fool" em 1988. A banda também fez uma interpretação semelhante de "She moved through the fair". Dark Sanctuary, uma banda gótica e neoclássica francesa, também fez um cover de "The garden of Jane Delawney" em seu álbum "Exaudi vocem meam - part I", lançado em 2005.

"On the shore" foi gravado em outubro de 1970 e lançado em janeiro de 1971 pela CBS Records (CBS 64168). Posteriormente, foi lançado em CD pelo selo BGO. O álbum trazia uma capa feita por Storm Thorgerson do estúdio Hipgnosis. As fotos da capa foram tiradas no The Hill Garden, parte da Inverforth House, Hampstead Heath, no noroeste de Londres, projetado pelo arquiteto paisagista Thomas Mawson. A modelo da foto era Katie Meehan, filha de Tony Meehan da The Shadows.

Neste álbum a formação foi: Celia Humphris no vocal principal, Barry Clarke na guitarra solo e dulcimer, David Costa no violão acústico, guitarra elétrica de 12 cordas e bandolim, Bias Boshell no baixo, vocal, piano e violão de 12 cordas, Unwin Brown na bateria, vocais e pandeiro, e Tony Cox como produtor.

DESEMPENHO

Trees se apresentou extensivamente ao longo de sua carreira, predominantemente no circuito universitário, mas aparecendo duas vezes em Fairfield Halls e no Queen Elizabeth Hall no South Bank de Londres, com vários graus de sucesso e às vezes reconhecido com elogios críticos significativos. Ao longo de sua carreira em turnê, a banda apoiou artistas como Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, Matthew's Southern Comfort, Fleetwood Mac, Free e Faces on the same bill, Genesis, Family e Yes, e apareceu no Evolution Music Festival em Le Bourget, Paris em 1970 ao lado de Ginger Baker's Air Force, Pink Floyd e Procol Harum.

DEPOIS DA TREES

Trees was a British folk rock band recording and touring throughout 1969, 1970 and 1971, reforming briefly to continue performing throughout 1972. Although the group met with little commercial success in their time, the reputation of the band has grown over the years, and underwent a renaissance in 2007 following Gnarls Barkley's sampling of the track "Geordie" (from Trees' second album "On the shore") on the title track of their multi-million selling album "St. Elsewhere".

HISTORY

FORMATION

The original band comprised five members: bass and keyboard player Bias Boshell, lead guitarist Barry Clarke, acoustic guitarist David Costa, drummer Unwin Brown and singer Celia Humphris.

David Costa, son of British singer and radio presenter Sam Costa, was reading Fine Arts at the recently opened University of East Anglia when he met Barry Clarke (who had been working at Royd's advertising agency in London) through a mutual girlfriend who had suggested, as they were both guitar players, that they should connect. In David's words, following their first meeting: "I never went back to University, and Barry never went back to his office". Barry Clarke was living at the time in a house in Barnes, shared with Bias Boshell.

Bias Boshell and Unwin Brown had both attended Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire, and within a short time, all four were sharing their diverse musical experiences, exploring their different tastes and bringing together what they each enjoyed in common with each other. Lacking a singer, Costa suggested they audition the sister of an acquaintance of his and introduced Celia Humphris into the mix, who had just left Arts Educational where she had studied dance, drama, and singing. Humphris' father was the painter and illustrator Frank Humphris: an example of his work was the strip "Riders of the range" in the children's comic "The eagle".

The five of them began rehearsing in the early spring of 1969, starting to do their first gigs and early demo tracks throughout June and July of the same year.

CARRER

Signed to CBS in August 1969, Trees produced two studio albums in relatively quick succession, "The garden of Jane Delawney" and "On the shore", both recorded at Chelsea's Sound Techniques studios, and both produced by Tony Cox. Like other folk contemporaries, Trees was compared with Fairport Convention, but regarded as delivering with a more psychedelic edge. The group's material was divided between adaptations of traditional songs and original compositions, primarily by Bias Boshell. In a 2020 interview, Costa commented: "We got labelled as a folk-rock band, full stop, but our influences were generally far more American than British".

The original group disbanded in 1971 after recording the two albums. A second Trees incarnation formed in 1972 and played until 1973: this group featured Celia Humphris, Barry Clarke, Barry Lyons (ex-member of Mr. Fox), Alun Eden (also ex-member of Mr. Fox) and Chuck Fleming (ex-member of the JSD Band). Recordings by this line-up can be found on bootleg releases.

This latest formation also contributed to Phil Trainer's solo album "Trainer" (BASF, 1972)

ALBUMS

"The garden of Jane Delawney" was recorded in early 1970, and released April 24, 1970. In this album the formation was: Celia Humphris on lead vocals, Barry Clarke on lead and acoustic guitars, David Costa on acoustic and 12-string guitars and in design and cover painting, Bias Boshell on bass, vocal, acoustic guitar, Unwin Brown on drums, and the engineers Mike FitzHenry and Vic Gamm.

Françoise Hardy covered "The garden of Jane Delawney" on her album "If you listen". All About Eve covered "The garden of Jane Delawney" as a B-side to its single "What kind of fool" in 1988. The band also did a similar interpretation of "She moved through the fair". Dark Sanctuary, a French goth and neo-classical band, also covered "The garden of Jane Delawney" on its album "Exaudi vocem meam - part I", released in 2005.

"On the shore" was recorded in October 1970, and released in January 1971 on CBS Records (CBS 64168). It was later released on CD by the BGO label. The album featured cover artwork made by Storm Thorgerson of the Hipgnosis studio. The cover photographs were taken at The Hill Garden, part of Inverforth House, Hampstead Heath in North West London, designed by landscape architect Thomas Mawson. The model in the photo was Katie Meehan, daughter of Tony Meehan from The Shadows. 

 

In this album the formation was: Celia Humphris on lead vocal, Barry Clarke on lead guitar and dulcimer, David Costa on acoustic and electric 12-string guitar and mandolin, Bias Boshell on bass, vocal, piano and acoustic 12-string guitar, Unwin Brown on drums, vocals and tambourine, and Tony Cox as producer.

PERFORMANCE

Trees performed extensively throughout their career, predominantly on the university circuit but appearing twice at Fairfield Halls and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank, with varying degrees of success and at times recognised with significant critical praise. Throughout its touring career, the band supported acts including Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, Matthew's Southern Comfort, Fleetwood Mac, Free and Faces on the same bill, Genesis, Family and Yes, and appeared at the Evolution Music Festival in Le Bourget, Paris in 1970 alongside Ginger Baker's Air Force, Pink Floyd and Procol Harum.

A very early gig in London's Notting Hill had them appearing with a virtually unknown David Bowie. The band were often accompanied on the road and supported by singer-songwriter Marc Ellington. They were originally managed by Douglas Smith and Clearwater Productions, a Notting Hill Gate company who also managed contemporaries such as High Tide, Cochise and Skin Alley and went on to manage Hawkwind and Thunderclap Newman.

Trees achieved ongoing support from early in their performing and recording career by radio DJs John Peel and Bob Harris, for whom they were later to appear twice in his "Sounds of the seventies" TV series, and also Pete Drummond, who was later to marry singer Celia Humphris.

AFTER TREES

• Bias Boshell went on to work as a keyboard player and songwriter with The Kiki Dee Band, writing her hit song "I've got the music in me", before joining Barclay James Harvest and subsequently The Moody Blues, replacing keyboard player Patrick Moraz. He now lives in North Wales.

• Barry Clarke went on to join the Vigrass and Osborne band, subsequently to rejoin David Costa in the 1973 band and eponymous album "Casablanca" (Rocket Records). Barry Clarke continued into the jewellery business, living part-time in France.

• David Costa went on to become art director and designer for many notable artists such as Elton John, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Costa and Boshell performed together as reunion act called On The Shore Band in 2018.

• After a brief spell as drummer with the pop foursome Capricorn, Unwin Brown went on to enjoy a long career as a teacher, eventually at Thomas's School in Kensington until his death in 2008.

• Celia Humphris continued with Trees' second lineup, and subsequently went on to become a sought-after voice-over artist and provided vocals as guest for several songs on Judy Dyble's "Talking with strangers" album in 2009, Dodson and Fogg, a folk-rock project released in 2012, and as guest vocalist on Galley Beggar's 2017 album "Heathen hymns", released on Rise Above Records. She later lived in France. She died on 11 January 2021.

REISSUES

Both "The garden of Jane Delawney" and "On the shore" have been continuously available since their original release in either vinyl, cassette or CD formats. A deluxe two-disc edition of "On the shore" was released in 2007, containing previously unreleased and remixed material. A new edition of "The garden of Jane Delawney" followed in 2008, also containing previously unreleased material as well as some new recordings. Both double packages feature an extensive essay by comedian, director and writer Stewart Lee.

A four-album box set of Trees' recordings, including demos, remixes, plus live recordings from the Trees' 1998 reunion act, On The Shore Band, was released in 2020 to mark the band's fiftieth anniversary.
