Life - Spring - 1971 (Heavy Psych Country Blues Rock {Alemanha})

A história da Life e de seu único álbum, "Spring", começou no início de 1971, depois que Christian Burchard da Embryo visitou o compositor, músico, produtor, engenheiro de som e artista Julius Schittenhelm em seu estúdio em Munique. Em sua autobiografia, Julius Schittenhelm escreve sobre o início da Life, as dificuldades da produção do LP e o fim abrupto da banda.

"Mais uma vez, Christian Burchard veio ao meu estúdio romantizando sobre um trio americano chamado The Wedge que queria gravar um disco na Alemanha. Quando os conheci, eles eram apenas uma dupla - o baixista havia voltado para a América. O líder da banda, originalmente o baterista e vocalista, chamava-se Linus, falava alemão com um estranho sotaque de Frankfurt, agora era guitarrista. Ele era de constituição mediana como eu, tinha cicatrizes no rosto, nariz grande e aparência de durão.

O segundo homem chamava-se Jason e era meio índio vermelho. Ele tocava guitarra solo, cantava backing e às vezes vocal principal. Eles logo encontraram um baterista, Marcel Mohr, e um baixista, Gernot Pilz, ambos vindos da região de Munique. Gernot também foi fotógrafo de imprensa. Um casal de cantores de ópera do subúrbio de Schwabing, em Munique, montou um estúdio e salas de ensaio em sua adega na Martiusstrasse, que alugou a preços acessíveis. Foi aqui que a banda praticou. A música era rock 'n' roll com leves influências country, não exatamente o meu tipo de música, mas moderna e em alta.

A maioria das músicas foram escritas por Linus, três eram de Jason e uma de Gernot. Linus era um perfeccionista e por isso a banda precisou de alguns meses para obter a precisão que ele considerou necessária para a produção de um disco.

No início de julho as bandas de rock 'n' roll estavam em perfeita harmonia entre si para que pudéssemos começar a gravar. Isso aconteceu em duas das salas de prática da Martiusstrasse. Usei 2 máquinas Revox ligadas simultaneamente para gravar quatro canais ao mesmo tempo.

Um eletricista que conheci por acaso construiu para mim uma placa de circuito com a qual eu poderia sincronizar os Revoxes usando um controle remoto. Até então eu operava as duas máquinas usando dois dedos e para a terceira precisei de ajuda com alguns 'um-dois-três' e fiquei feliz quando funcionou. A terceira máquina era para a mixagem.

Demorou um mês inteiro de verão quente até que todas as faixas estivessem na lata. Depois de todas as fitas terem sido cuidadosamente numeradas e catalogadas começamos a mixagem e no final de julho a fita master estava finalmente finalizada.

Linus, que tinha jeito com as palavras, começou a lidar com a CBS. Para ficarmos bem, alugamos um grande Mercedes. O líder da banda Linus e eu, como produtor, engenheiro de som e motorista, dirigimos até Hamburgo usando a nova e ainda vazia Autobahn entre Wurzburg e Hattenbach, onde eu realmente coloquei o pé no acelerador a 180 km por hora. Linus começou a gritar e me fez prometer que iria desacelerar para 130 km/h, pois era tudo o que ele conseguia aguentar. Assim que chegamos à CBS não tivemos que esperar muito e tocamos a fita demo imediatamente. O empresário responsável pelo rock 'n' roll pareceu gostar e também Linus. De qualquer forma, um contrato foi assinado, felizmente sem mim. Houve um adiantamento substancial e com isso fui pago pelo meu trabalho. A banda foi chamada de Life e o LP 'Spring' foi lançado. Seguiu-se uma extensa turnê promocional. Não tenho idéia de quantos ou mesmo se algum disco foi vendido. Mohr fez seu trabalho e foi embora.

Durante o verão tivemos mais sessões de gravação para o segundo LP. Na véspera de Ano Novo de 1971 a 1972, o gerente da CBS passou por baixo de um caminhão e foi morto. Seu sucessor não gostou da música nem da banda e interrompeu o projeto. Em fevereiro de 1972 a banda se separou durante uma turnê italiana. Deve ter havido algumas discussões bastante acirradas quando eles voltaram separados, Yeda Linus empacotou suas coisas e aparentemente desapareceu para a Suécia. A primeira vez que ouvi falar dele desde então foi em junho de 2002, quando estávamos planejando este CD. Ele ainda é músico e me disse que Jason estava morando nos Estados Unidos".

Durante a pesquisa para este álbum, Julius Schittenhelm descobriu fitas, consideradas perdidas, que produziu com as outras gravações na adega de Munique. Dessas gravações escolhemos três como faixas bônus para este CD e as demais aparecerão em lançamentos futuros. - Manfred Steinheuer, junho de 2002.

The story of Life and its only album, "Spring" began sometime early 1971 after Christian Burchard from Embryo visited composer, musician, producer, sound engineer and artist Julius Schittenhelm in his Munich studio. In his forthcoming autobiography Julius Schittenhelm writes about the beginning of Life, the difficulties of the LP production and the abrupt end of the band.

"Once again Christian Burchard came to my studio romancing about an American Trio called The Wedge that wanted to make a record in Germany. When I met them they were only a duo - the bass player had gone back to America. The band leader, originally the drummer and lead singer, was called Linus, he spoke German with a strange Frankfurt accent was now a rhythm guitar player. He was of average build like myself, had a scarred face, large nose and a tough look.

The second man was called Jason and was half Red Indian. He played lead guitar, sang backing and sometimes lead vocals. They soon found a drummer, Marcel Mohr, and a bassist, Gernot Pilz who both came from the Munich area. Gernot was also a press photographer. An opera singing couple from the Munich suburb of Schwabing had set up a studio and practice rooms in their cellar in Martiusstrasse which they rented out at atfordable prices. This is where the band practiced. The music was rock 'n' roll with slight country influences, not exactly my sort of music but fashionable and on the up.

Most of the songs were written by Linus, three were from Jason and one from Gernot. Linus was a perfectionist and thus the band needed a few months for the precision he found was required for a record production.

At the beginning of July the rock 'n' roll musiclans were in perfect harmony with each other so we could start recording. This took place in two of the Martiusstrasse practice rooms. I used 2 Revox machines switched on simultaneously to record four channels at once.

An electrician I met by chance built me a circuit board with which I could synchronise the Revoxes using a remote control. Until then I had been operating the two machines using two fingers and for the third one I needed help with some 'one-two-threes' and was happy when it worked. The third machine was for the mix.

It took a whole hot summer month until all the tracks were in the can. After all the tapes were carefully numbered and catalogued we started mixing and at the end of July the master tape was finally finished.

Linus, who had a way with words, started dealing with CBS. To look good we rented a big Mercedes. Bandleader Linus and myself as producer, sound engineer and chauffeur drove to Hamburg using the new and still empty Autobahn between Wurzburg and Hattenbach where I really put my foot on the gas doing 180 km an hour (112 mph). Linus started shouting and made me promise to slow down to 130 kph (80 mph) as that was all he could handle. Once we got to CBS we didn't have to wait long and played the demo tape straight away. The manager responsible for rock 'n' roll seemed to like it and also Linus. Anyway a contract was signed, luckily without me. There was a substantial advance and from this I was paid for my work. The band was named Life and the LP 'Spring' was released. An extensive promo tour followed. I have no idea how many or even if any records were sold. Mohr had done his work and left.

Through the summer we had further recording sessions for the second LP. On New Year's Eve 1971 to 1972 the CBS manager drove under a lorry and was killed. His successor didn't like the music or the band and stopped the project. In February 1972 the band broke up during an Italian tour. There must have been some pretty hefty arguments going on as they arrived back separate Yeda Linus packed up his stuff and apparently disappeared to Sweden. The first I heard from him since then was in June 2002 when we were planning this CD. He is still a musician and he told me that Jason was living in the States".

During the research into this album Julius Schittenhelm discovered tapes, believed lost, that he produced with the other recordings in the Munich cellar. From these recordings we have chosen three as bonus tracks for this CD and the others will appear on future releases. - Manfred Steinheuer, June 2002.
