Cirkus - One - 1973 (Progressive Rock {UK})

Apesar de ter sido gravado de forma independente, a estréia de 1973 do quinteto progressivo britânico Cirkus é um dos álbuns mais bem sucedidos do seu gênero, relembrando o trabalho de Yes, King Crimson e The Moody Blues, com muitos trabalhos criativos de teclado e guitarra.

HISTÓRIA

Cirkus foi formada a partir das cinzas das bandas Moonhead e Lucas Tyson. O alto padrão de musicalidade do grupo era bem conhecido em sua cidade natal, Sunderland, no nordeste da Inglaterra, onde atraíram muita atenção e tinham seguidores devotos. Sentiu-se que o quinteto poderia alcançar o sucesso em escala nacional, desde que a administração tratasse os assuntos de maneira adequada e conseguissem os intervalos certos. Em 1973 a banda gravou seu álbum de estréia, "One", no Sound Associates e Emison & Air Studios, e apenas 1.000 cópias foram prensadas.

Quando em 1975 o vocalista Paul Robson deixou o grupo, seu substituto foi Alan Roadhouse (ex-Halfbreed), que também tocava saxofone. Com Dog nas guitarras acústicas e elétricas, Derek Miller nos teclados, John Taylor no baixo e o compositor principal Stu McDade fornecendo os vocais de apoio, bateria e percussão variada, esta se tornou a nova formação. Como resultado, a banda se afastou de seu estilo sinfônico inicial, adotando uma abordagem um pouco mais mainstream, embora mantendo um certo som que definiu o som da Cirkus.

Em 1977, Cirkus fez um movimento incomum ao fazer uma turnê com uma produção teatral um tanto maluca chamada Future Shock. Baseado no musical, foi lançado um LP de mesmo nome, embora nenhum dos integrantes da banda tenha escrito nada do material. O LP foi lançado pela Shock Records e hoje é muito raro. A música é de natureza extravagante e excêntrica, muito longe das raízes do rock progressivo da banda. Um ano depois, uma faixa da Cirkus chamada "I'm on fire" foi incluída no LP "Battle of the bands", mas esta provou ser sua oferta final antes que os cinco seguissem caminhos separados no início dos anos 80.

Em 1994 foi lançado "The global cut" (como Cirkus II) pelo selo Audio Archives, onde o único membro da formação original é Derek Miller. Em 1998, o tão aguardado e magnífico terceiro álbum da Cirkus, "Pantomyne" (como Cirkus III), foi finalmente lançado pelo mesmo selo. Este esplêndido álbum trouxe os membros originais e o principal compositor, Stu McDade, de volta ao grupo e contou com participações especiais de uma série de outros músicos, mais notavelmente o ex-vocalista Alan Roadhouse, que tocou flauta.

Outros trabalhos são os lançamentos da Ramshaw Records "The blue star" (2017, como Cirkus IV) e "Trapeze" (2020, como Cirkus V), e o lançamento independente "Page 12 (On the right)" (em 2021, como Cirkus).

"One" continua sendo um álbum requintado de criatividade excepcional, merecendo sua posição elevada no reino do rock progressivo.

Despite being self-recorded, the 1973 debut by the British progressive quintet Cirkus is one of the most accomplished albums in its genre, recalling the work of Yes, King Crimson, and The Moody Blues, with plenty of imaginative keyboard and guitar works.

HISTORY

Cirkus was formed from the ashes of bands Moonhead and Lucas Tyson. The group's high standard of musicianship was well known in their hometown, City of Sunderland, in the northeast of England, where they attracted much attention and had a devoted following. It was felt that the quintet could achieve success on a national scale, provided management handled matters properly and they got the right breaks. In 1973 the band recorded its debut album, "One", at Sound Associates and Emison & Air Studios, and just 1,000 copies were pressed up.

When in 1975 lead vocalist Paul Robson left the group, his replacement was Alan Roadhouse (ex-Halfbreed) who also played the saxophone. With Dog on acoustic and electric guitars, Derek Miller on keyboards, John Taylor on bass and main songwriter Stu McDade providing backing vocals, drums and assorted percussion, this became the new line-up. As a result, the band moved away from their initial symphonic style, adopting a slightly more mainstream approach, whilst maintaining a certain sound that defined the Cirkus sound.

In 1977 Cirkus made an unusual move by touring in a somewhat zany theatre production called Future Shock. Based on the musical, and an LP of the same name was released, although none of the band members wrote any of the material. The LP was issued by Shock Records and is now very rare. The music is of a whimsical and offbeat nature, a far cry from the outfit's prog-rock roots. A year later a Cirkus track called "I'm on fire" was featured on a "Battle of the bands" LP but this proved to be its final offering before the five went their separate ways in the early '80s.

In 1994 was released "The global cut" (as Cirkus II) on the label Audio Archives, where the only member of the original lineup is Derek Miller. In 1998 the much anticipated and quite magnificent third Cirkus album "Pantomyne" (as Cirkus III) was finally unveiled on the same label. This splendid album brought original members, and main songwriter, Stu McDade back into the fold and featured cameo performances by an array of other musicians, most notably former frontman Alan Roadhouse, who played flute.

Other works are the Ramshaw Records's releases "The blue star" (2017, as Cirkus IV) and "Trapeze" (2020, as Cirkus V), and the self released "Page 12 (On the right)" (in 2021, as Cirkus).

"One" remains an exquisite album of outstanding creativity much deserving its high standing in the kingdom of progressive rock.
