Em 1977, a banda Cirkus apareceu em um espetáculo teatral baseado no livro de Alvin Toffler - "Future shock" (de 1970) - como elenco acompanhante. O material musical foi encomendado pelos organizadores do programa e todas as composições foram escritas por terceiros (principalmente John Saxby, vocalista principal e produtor do projeto).

Por que Derek Miller e sua equipe precisavam disso é uma grande questão: muito provavelmente o grupo, sentindo-se no limite, queria se testar em um novo gênero - um musical de rock. A gravação consiste em 15 composições multipolares e bizarras, repletas de peças bem adaptadas de hard rock virtuoso, ou improvisações progressivas, ou recitativos patéticos e coros femininos, ou trechos de jazz. Não está de forma alguma unido por um componente progressista, razão pela qual não se enquadra em nenhum gênero e deixa um sabor amargo de incerteza.

A faixa "Spanish dream" é, na verdade, uma adaptação - não creditada no disco - da música "Sons de carrilhões", obra de 1926 do músico e compositor brasileiro João Teixeira Guimarães, mais conhecido como João Pernambuco (clicando aqui, você poderá escutá-la na interpretação de Raphael Rabello e aqui na versão original).

A gravação, feita no Impulse Studios, foi lançada em edição limitada em vinil e desapareceu muito rapidamente. O lançamento do compacto foi adiado por muito tempo devido a aprovações complexas de direitos autorais e material muito heterogêneo e não reclamado e apareceu em 2006 na Vinyl Japan, sendo tão difícil de conseguir quanto o original. Outros lançamentos incluem os de 2019, pelos selos Big Pink (Big Pink 604) e Vivid Sound (VSCD 5854).

"Future shock" é um trabalho bastante interessante e pouco convencional de um grande grupo, onde seria injusto não notar a habilidade dos membros da banda Cirkus como músicos profissionais.

In 1977, the band Cirkus appeared in a theater show based on Alvin Toffler's book - "Future shock" (1970) - as an accompanying cast. The musical material was commissioned by the program organizers and all compositions were written by third parties (mainly John Saxby, lead vocalist and producer of the project).

Why Derek Miller and his team needed this is a big question: most likely the group, feeling on edge, wanted to test themselves in a new genre - a rock musical. The recording consists of 15 multipolar and bizarre compositions, filled with well-adapted pieces of virtuoso hard rock, or progressive improvisations, or pathetic recitatives and female choirs, or jazz excerpts. It is in no way united by a progressive component, which is why it does not fit into any genre and leaves a bitter aftertaste of uncertainty.
