HISTÓRIA

1970-1972: SUCESSO INICIAL

A banda Chase foi criada em 1970 por Bill Chase, Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware e Jerry Van Blair, todos trompetistas veteranos de jazz que também eram adeptos de vocais e arranjos. Eles foram apoiados por uma seção rítmica composta por Phil Porter nos teclados, Angel South (nascido Lucien Gondron de Port Arthur, Texas) na guitarra, Dennis Johnson no baixo e Jay Burrid (nascido John Mitthauer) na percussão. 1972: ENNEA

Parte da música "Cronus" foi apresentada na introdução do programa da Telewizja Polska "Magazyn Kryminalny 997".

"Swanee river", que abre o álbum, era originalmente intitulada "Closer to the feeling" e teria um sabor quase Allman Brothers, mas a letra ainda não tinha sido escrita. Quando G.G. 1974: PURE MUSIC

Após o fracasso na venda do LP "Ennea" no mercado de massa e um hiato prolongado, Chase ressurgiu no início de 1974 com o lançamento de "Pure music", o terceiro álbum. O álbum contou com uma nova formação, mas mantendo a seção de quatro trompetes liderada por Bill Chase.

Embora grande parte da música lançada no álbum tenha sido tocada pela banda ao longo de um ano e meio, a nova direção musical foi um afastamento das canções dominadas pelos vocais e focando mais em melodias instrumentais de jazz-rock para mostrar o estilo dinâmico de tocar de Bill. O efeito geral teve um apelo mais comercial e foi muito popular entre estudantes de bandas do ensino médio e universitários.

Jim Peterik co-escreveu dois números vocais para o álbum e para serem tocados ao vivo, "Run back to mama" e "Love is on the way": uma terceira versão vocal da música "Pure music" foi retirada do LP porque não parecia o suficiente com a Chase. Versões ao vivo de "Bochawa" e "Close up tight" foram sendo alteradas para sempre na estrada.

1974-PRESENTE: ACIDENTE DE AVIÃO E ANOS POSTERIORES

HISTORY

1970-1972: EARLY SUCCESS

The band Chase was created in 1970 by Bill Chase, Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, all veteran jazz trumpeters who were also adept at vocals and arranging. They  were backed up by a rhythm section consisting of Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South (born Lucien Gondron from Port Arthur, Texas) on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and Jay Burrid (born John Mitthauer) on percussion. Rounding out the group was Terry Richards, who was featured as lead vocalist on the first album. In April 1971, the band released its debut album, "Chase", which contains Chase's best-known song, "Get it on".

The single "Get it on" spent thirteen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart starting in May 1971, eventually peaking at #24 in July of that year. This success drove album sales to more than 400,000 units - unusually high for a jazz artist. The album charted for a total of 26 weeks, peaking at number 22. "Get it on" peaked at number 76 in Australia in 1971. The band received a "Best new artist" Grammy Award nomination, but was edged out by Carly Simon.

In addition the conventional stereo version, the album was released by Epic in a quadraphonic edition on LP and 8-track tape in 1972. The quad LP release was encoded with the SQ matrix system.

The stereo version of this album was re-released in Japan on CD in 1997. The album was reissued in the UK on the Super Audio CD format in 2018 by Dutton Vocalion. This one-disc release also contains Chase's 1974 album "Pure music". The Dutton Vocalion's disc contains the complete stereo and quad mixes of both albums.

1971 proved to be the band's most fruitful with television spots on the "Tonight Show" and "Tommy Smothers' Organic Prime Time Space Ride". Chicago's WBBM televised a 1/2 hour special featuring the group but was aired only around the Chicago area. Appearances at both the Kansas City Jazz and Newport Jazz Festival boosted the band's popularity. 

1972: ENNEA

Chase released its second album, "Ennea", in March 1972. The original lineup from the first album was changed midway through the recording sessions, with Gary Smith taking over from Jay Burrid on drums and G.G. Shinn replacing Terry Richards on lead vocal. Sessions for the recording occurred August 31-September 8, 1971, at CBS/Columbia Studios in San Francisco and again between November 15 and December 8, 1971. According to Chase's attorney Alex Deveince, the cost of the album went $120,000 over budget.

The six songs on side two of the album comprise a progressive jazz-rock suite entitled "Ennea", with lyrics based on Greek mythology. The album's title is the Greek word for "nine", a reference to the nine band members. The lyrics to the suite were written by Bill Chase's longtime lady companion Erin Adair. The tune "Cronus" was originally used as an instrumental.

The single "So many people" (written by Paul Williams and performed by both him and The Neighborhood) saw limited airplay in the U.S. The album charted for just 12 weeks, peaking at number 71.

Part of the song "Cronus" was featured in the intro to the Telewizja Polska show "Magazyn Kryminalny 997".

"Swanee river", which opens the album, was originally entitled "Closer to the feeling" and was going to have a quasi-Allman Brothers flavor, but the lyrics had yet to be written. When G.G. Shinn was listening to the playbacks in the studio, he noted the chord changes were the same as Stephen Foster's immortal "Old folks at home", so the title was altered.

"It won't be long" was penned by organist Phil Porter and initially was much slower and had more of an "Asian" feel. Charlie Brent re-arranged the song for the band to feature a screaming solo for Bill and highlight the brilliance of the trumpets more.

The songs "Darkest days" and "Listen to her sing" were slated to be included on the album. However, original vocalist Terry Richards was fired in November 1971 before recordings were completed.

The album cover was photographed in December 1971 by renowned rock photographer Jim Marshall at the Music Concourse plaza in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

In his retrospective review for Allmusic, critic Bruce Eder wrote that although the band's second album appeared with high expectations, "'Ennea' fell so far short in critical reception and sales... What was lacking was balance - the rock and jazz elements that seemed so finely tuned together on the first album don't coexist as easily on this album... 'Ennea' still has lots of good moments and some great ones - greater, at times, that anything on the first album if nowhere near as appealing and concise overall - and is still worth hearing".

1974: PURE MUSIC

Following the failure to sell the "Ennea" LP on a mass market and an extended hiatus, Chase re-emerged early in 1974 with the release of "Pure music", the third album. The album featured a new line-up, yet keeping the four-trumpet section headed by Bill Chase.

Though much of the music released on the album had been performed by the band over a span of a year and half, the new musical direction was a departure from vocal dominated songs and focusing more on jazz-rock instrumental tunes to showcase Bill's dynamic playing style. The overall effect had a more commercial appeal and was highly popular among high school and college band students.

Jim Peterik had co-written two vocal numbers for the album and to be performed live, "Run back to mama" and "Love is on the way": a third vocal version of the song "Pure music" was scrapped from the LP because it did not sound enough like Chase. Live versions of "Bochawa" and "Close up tight" were forever being altered on the road.

Work on a fourth LP was in the works and during 1974, Chase had been performing a melodic flugelhorn piece called "Ode to a new England jellyfish" written by Bill. This tune was recorded during the summer of 1974 and was only missing Bill's solo section. A number of other charts were slated for potential inclusion, including "2001" a "Space odyssey" theme (arranged by Bob Odjeda), an instrumental version of "Aphrodite", from the "Ennea" LP, retitled "Shades of Venus", and Bill's arrangement of "MacArthur Park". Other selections, such as Bill's version of "Tubular bells", never made it beyond the sketch stage.

In his retrospective review for AllMusic, critic Ross Boissoneau wrote that the album "represented a dramatic change in direction for the band. Where the group's first two albums were standard if scintillating jazz-rock not all that different from Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chicago, 'Pure music' pointed the way to fusion. Heady stuff made all the more engaging as there was sadly to be no follow-up".

1974-PRESENT: PLANE CRASH AND LATER YEARS

Chase's work on a fourth studio album in mid-1974 came to an end on August 9, 1974, while en route to a scheduled performance at the Jackson County Fair, Bill Chase died in the crash of a chartered twin-engine Piper Twin Comanche in Jackson, Minnesota at the age of 39. Also killed, along with the pilot and a female companion, were keyboardist Wally Yohn, drummer Walter Clark, and guitarist John Emma.

In 1977 a Chase tribute band (composed primarily of the original line-up, and an added Walt Johnson) recorded an album entitled "Watch closely now".

In 2014, Chase was inducted into the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

PRESENT CAREER

• Bass player Dartanyan Brown is now a music teacher on the faculty of Marin Academy in San Rafael, California. Dartanyan has relocated back to his native Iowa.
• Trumpet player Jim Oatts is a member of the adjunct faculty of Simpson College in Iowa.
• Trumpet player and vocalist Ted Piercefield's album, "Chasing my dream", was to be included on the soundtrack of the 2016 movie "Where heaven and hell collide". Ted died June 23, 2021.
• Drummer John "Jay Burrid" Mitthaur lives in San Antonio, Texas where he plays with local bands.
• The lead vocalist on "Ennea", G.G. Shinn, died on August 7, 2018, in Monroe, Louisiana, after a long illness.
